Residential and Commuter Academies

Oklahoma Technical Schools and Colleges

YPNG wants to help more TPS students attend the 2022 Summer Residential and Commuter Academies on the campuses of Oklahoma’s Vocational Schools and Colleges. We will arrange transportation or reimburse the cost parents may incur for fuel, and pay any fees the schools charge for some academies

The residential and commuter academies on the attached list are all taught by college professors and give TPS high school students the opportunity to experience a college class and campus life! Participating colleges for 2022  include NEO, OSU, OSU Tech, OU and TU.

This list of 2022 Summer Camps scheduled is alsoposted under the “Events” pulldown on the YPNG.co homepage and will be updated as more academies are expected to be added now that Covid restrictions have been lifted. If you are having trouble registering or have registered and now need transportation or reimbursement for fees or fuel, contact wclangdon@ypng.co . There are limited spaces so sign up early!

Get Green for Blue: Outdoor STEM Investigations Connecting Water to You

Put on your waders, grab your net, and let’s catch those critters! Working in teams, you will learn about water quality through collecting data, analyzing the health of water bodies, and determining possible solutions to water quality problems. This STEM Summer Academy program is open to students entering the 8th through the 10th grades. Come to Northeastern State University in Broken Arrow and the Rogers County Outdoor Education Reserve June 21-24 and be a part of this fun, activity-based STEM adventure!

The safety of our participants is of paramount importance to us. Therefore, the CDC and NSU guidelines will be followed and are subject to change. Further information will be provided.

OSU Architecture Camp: Students 15 to 19 years of age who have an interest in learning about is a residential workshop. Student participants will live in the OSU dorms and work in the Donald W Reynolds School of Architecture Building on projects that allow for their creativity to shine. June 14th – 18th, 225$ fee.

CEAT Discovery Days: provides High School students the opportunity to explore various engineering and technology disciplines through once a week activities and presentations. Held on Fridays in June and July from 8:30am – 4:30pm on the Stillwater Campus, 30$ fee, includes lunch and t-shirt.

It’s a Polymer Life – Polymers of Everyday Life Summer Academy 10-12 Grade Students in Stillwater, Oklahoma Residential June 28 – July 2

Students will make polymers, understand and measure the properties of polymers, and why polymers are used in everyday life from packaging to automobile parts to artificial organs to bulletproof vests. In addition, they will learn in the laboratory dyeing different types of polymers from natural (cotton) to synthetic (polyester /nylon) and how the polymers’ properties affect the dyeing process.  Students will also explore the science of baking and experience college life in a five-day residential academy, June 28 – July 2, 2021. This is a partnership with OSU College of Arts & Sciences and the Division of Institutional Diversity. Operation Orange:Spend a day in the life of a medical student at Operation Orange, a summer camp for high school students interested in a career in medicine. Operation Orange is a free, one day mini medical camp for students in grades 9-12. Date(s) unannounced. Students will apply math and science skills while participating in hands-on lab exercises in seven different programs offered at OSUIT. Participants will have the opportunity to go on the job with Culinary Arts, Engineering Technologies, Visual Communications, Nursing, Information Technologies, Automotive, and Air Conditioning/Refrigeration graduates. In addition, students will be experiencing college life in dorms. Students will participate in many fun-filled evening activities and investigate the undeniable claim that a college degree will take students where they want to go.

Technology, Education and Collaborative (TEC) Academy

Held at The University of Tulsa, the Technology Education and Collaborative (TEC) Academy is a residential technology academy for students interested in computers and GPS-related technologies. Students will use hand-held GPS receivers for data collection at TU and during field trips, then process the data to create interactive GIS maps. Video, collected by participants, will use MovieMaker and i-Movie, chat rooms and journaling will be done with Blackboard, and GPS scavenger hunts and geo-caches will use GIS software. Escape games, swimming and other recreation will occur daily as well as many presentations in PowerPoint and Comic Life.

The Ultimate Technology, Engineering and Cryptography (U-TEC) Academy

Cryptography, engineering and technology go hand in hand. The University of Tulsa will host its first engineering and cryptography academy this coming summer for students who enjoy solving puzzles, finding solutions to engineering challenges, and are interested in integrating technology in the process. Four field trips are planned, including the tunnels under Tulsa, the Gathering Place and the Central Library Escape Room. Students not only find solutions to puzzles, but create their own. Escape games, cryptography challenges, swimming and other recreation will occur daily.

Summer Engineering Academy at The University of Tulsa

The Summer Engineering Academy at The University of Tulsa teaches students about careers in electrical and mechanical engineering through hands-on design projects, interactions with industry professionals, and group activities. Students will experience the engineering design process, including troubleshooting problems, and complete design challenges. Many activities center on the design, construction, and applications of an autonomous vehicle and drones, including soldering, sensor systems, and machining. Students will present their experiences and be invited to participate in follow-up activities. The goal is to enhance student interest in pursuing engineering as a career.

OU Engineering Days

OU Engineering Days are a summer day camp for rising high school juniors and seniors on select days in the month of June. Each day offers hands-on activities that highlight a different school in engineering.

Each Engineering Day will run from 8:30AM – 4:30PM approximately.

Check in will begin at 8:15AM and lunch will be provided for students.

Cost of attendance is $25 per day.

*Space is limited to 30 students per Engineering Day. Once an event has reached capacity, it will no longer be listed in the application below.

OU Engineering Days are designed for rising high school juniors and seniors (graduating in 2023 or 2024). There are no academic requirements before the camp, so any student in the grade bracket should be able to participate in the activities!

OU Architecture Academy

This academy offers thirty rising 9th through 12th grade students a one-week opportunity to explore the disciplines in The University of Oklahoma’s College of Architecture. The academy will introduce students to an interdisciplinary study of the built environment by incorporating the disciplines of Architecture, Interior Design, and Construction Science.

Program participants will live in university residence halls in order to experience real college life. Students from the College of Architecture will assist the academy students in order to facilitate collaborative interaction with students representing the disciplines associated with the College of Architecture.

On Campus Experience

Students will live in the university residence halls, eat on campus and learn in university classrooms – giving students a real “feel” for college life. Summer camp counselors will be housed on the same dormitory floor to provide maximum assistance and supervision. Students will have class activities each day in classrooms and state of the art laboratories on the research campus at OU-Norman. Educational, recreational and team building activities will take place in the evenings to help students have a well-rounded experience.

Tuition and Costs

All expenses, including housing, meals, supplies, and books will be provided to each academy student. Travel expenses to and from the academy location and incidental personal expenditures are the responsibility of the academy student.

Interested students must submit a typed or printed application that includes all of the following:

  1. Complete student application form
  2. Two letters of recommendation

THE OKLAHOMA MESONET PRESENTS: METEOROLOGY SWEEPING DOWN THE PLAINS

Available to: Rising 9th – 11th graders residing in Oklahoma

Dates: TBA for 2022

Location: OU Norman Campus

Tuition: There is no cost for accepted students.

This academy offers a one-week residential program for students entering 9th, 10th and 11th grades focused on weather. Students will learn about atmospheric interactions from fronts to thunderstorm development, how data are collected, and how to analyze weather maps. Students will be exposed to meteorology careers including operational forecasters from NOAA’s National Weather Service offices; field researchers; television broadcasters; and the emergency management community. Thirty students will be accepted.

On Campus Experience

Students will live in the university residence halls, eat on campus and learn in university classrooms – giving students a real “feel” for college life. Summer camp counselors will be housed on the same dormitory floor to provide maximum assistance and supervision. Sooner Flight Academy (Both In-Person and Virtual Options)

The OU Sooner Flight Academy summer flight camps are designed to challenge students ages six to 18 to experience the exciting world of flight. Camps include hands-on activities to help them engage with the science of physics in a fun and interactive way.

Aspiring Health Professions Summer Academy (AHPSA) is a week-long academy hosted by the Office of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion. It is geared toward current 9th-12th graders that are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare or research. Students will have the opportunity to experience our seven health profession colleges through hands-on activities, engaging discussion, and simulations.

Oklahoma Institute for Diversity in Journalism

July 12-16, from 8 a.m – 5 p.m. daily

The Oklahoma Institute for Diversity in Journalism offers an annual summer workshop for promising high school students. The program’s goal is to expose youth to careers in the world of daily journalism. OIDJ’s mission is to provide opportunities for students who would otherwise lack access to journalism training or who face other barriers to pursuing careers in journalism. Must submit an essay by April 8th and letters of recommendation from teachers.
